Child has discomfort in the private area, what are the white worms?

Patient's question:

My daughter is 5 years old. Recently, she has been complaining of discomfort in her private area. Upon examination, there was some redness and swelling. When gently opening the labia, white worms were found. What could be the cause and how should it be treated?

Doctor's answer:

Hello, it is likely a type of intestinal parasite called pinworm. It cannot be eliminated with medication. This worm goes outside the body or onto underwear or bedding to mate and then returns to the anus to lay eggs. Within a very short time, the eggs hatch into larvae that burrow back into the large intestine to move around. Since the vaginal opening is very close to the anus, these worms can easily enter the vagina when returning after mating. First, it is important to develop good hygiene habits: wash hands before meals and after using the toilet, trim nails frequently, and correct the habit of biting fingers or other objects. Children should be dressed in underpants as early as possible. After defecating and before going to bed, clean the anus and apply pinworm cream, preferably into the anus (a small amount), to prevent reinfection. Every day, place bedding and items used by the child in sunlight for exposure. If possible, change and wash bedding and children's clothes daily. Wash children's underwear daily after changing them and boil them in boiling water to kill the eggs.
