What causes vaginal bleeding outside of the menstrual period?

Patient's question:

Detailed medical condition and consultation purpose: My period started on November 2nd, and it's always a 29-day cycle. Since yesterday, I've noticed bleeding from my vagina, which is bright red and in small amounts. Every time I use the restroom, there's a bit on the toilet paper. Could you please tell me what's wrong with me?
Duration of the current illness: Two days

Doctor's answer:

Non-menstrual vaginal bleeding can be of physiological or pathological origin. Generally, during the ovulation period, some women may experience ovulatory bleeding, also known as mid-cycle bleeding, which refers to light bleeding between two normal menstrual cycles. It may be accompanied by varying degrees of mild abdominal pain. If the symptoms are mild, no treatment is needed. However, if the bleeding is heavy or affects fertility, medication can be used.
However, irregular vaginal bleeding should also be considered as a possible sign of the following conditions: cervical polyps, acute vaginitis, severe cervical erosion, cervical cancer, submucosal uterine fibroids, and others. Additionally, sometimes due to the insertion of an intrauterine device, small blood streaks may be present in the vaginal discharge.
It is recommended that you visit a hospital for examination and consult a doctor to identify the cause and receive timely and appropriate treatment.
