Features: The establishment, transformation, and survival status of township institutions are strongly correlated with three variables: the state, rural society, and the bureaucratic machine. This book aims to examine the logic of the growth of township institutions shaped by the interaction of these three factors, thereby providing foundational analysis for the "roots" of township institutions in terms of their "origins" in a realistic context, and offering a political sociological review of the power practices and survival mechanisms of township institutions. It also attempts to provide a theoretical summary of political relationships in practice. "Diligence, pragmatism, strictness, and flexibility" are the century-old motto of my alma mater, Yongxing County Middle School in Hunan Province, which has deeply influenced my growth as a way of conduct. However, using it as the postscript for my first writing is not out of nostalgia, but because it also represents an approach to scholarship. As a junior scholar interested in rural studies, I have come to appreciate this principle due to the influence of the rural studies group in Central China.
