Features: Tuberculosis, which has claimed countless lives, was not considered a curable disease until the mid-20th century in 1945. The invention of antituberculosis plants—streptomycin and other important drugs—made tuberculosis no longer an incurable condition. China's tuberculosis epidemic is also severe, with over 400 million people infected with tuberculosis bacteria. Each year, about 250,000 people die from tuberculosis, which is twice the total number of deaths from other infectious diseases. Rural areas in China have the highest number of tuberculosis cases, accounting for around 80%. Tuberculosis has become a major cause of poverty and relapse into poverty in rural areas; it has also become the leading cause of death among young people. For this reason, tuberculosis in China has been included by the World Health Organization as one of the countries and regions requiring special attention, and the Ministry of Health has listed tuberculosis as one of the major diseases under national priority control.
According to the requirements of the editorial committee of The Great Wall of Life—Popular Science Series on Public Health Emergencies, we organized five frontline medical personnel who primarily engage in clinical diagnosis, prevention, teaching, and research on tuberculosis and other infectious diseases to compile this volume, Knowledge on Tuberculosis Prevention. We strive to make it concise, easy to understand, and blend literary, scientific, and popular elements, with the goal of enabling a broad readership to comprehend and appreciate the book, thereby gaining knowledge about tuberculosis prevention and control.
