Features: The course of Number Theory is offered in both the Department of Mathematics at Normal Universities and Normal Colleges. Its trial teaching syllabus was formulated and implemented by the Ministry of Education in 1955. However, due to the lack of an appropriate textbook or reference book, teachers teaching this course have always faced certain difficulties in selecting materials and assigning references. I and Comrade Yan Shijian successively taught the course of Number Theory at the Normal University. Initially, when the syllabus had not yet been formulated, I had to use "Fundamentals of Number Theory" by H. M. (translated by Comrade Qiu Guangming) as the main reference book, while also making necessary supplements based on the Soviet teaching syllabus. Due to the lack of an appropriate textbook, I planned to compile lecture notes, but due to time constraints, only some supplementary materials were written at that time, and most of the course was still taught based on the book "Fundamentals of Number Theory." Comrade Yan Shijian, during the subsequent period of teaching this course, organized and compiled a complete set of lecture notes. Later, under the urging of the Ministry of Education, we compiled this book based on the trial teaching syllabus of Number Theory at Normal Colleges, making further revisions and supplements.
