Features: Wang Hui, a renowned painter, poet, art educator, and activist. Known by the courtesy name Jingcao and the late name Nan Guo Teng Weng, he was born in Wenzhou, Zhejiang. Raised in a family of calligraphers and painters, he gained fame in southern Zhejiang at the age of ten when he held a joint exhibition with his father, Mr. Wang Nan. In the 1940s, he studied at the Shanghai Art College and the Hangzhou National Art College, actively participating in patriotic student movements. He became a disciple of the master painters Liu Haisu, Huang Binhong, and Pan Tianshou. In 1949, he joined the Southward Service Corps of the People's Liberation Army and worked successively in various organizations in Fujian, including the Fujian Provincial Communist Youth League, Fujian Painting Press, Fujian Provincial Publishing Bureau, and Fujian Provincial Association of Fine Arts, forging an inseparable bond with the mountains and waters of Fujian.
Mr. Wang Hui is a man of vast knowledge and extraordinary talent, with profound expertise and research in poetry, calligraphy, painting, and aesthetics. His paintings emphasize artistic conception, spiritual resonance, and innovative thinking, blending tradition while breaking free from rigid conventions. His brushwork is bold, unrestrained, and deeply imbued with the artistic spirit of Huang Binhong. His calligraphy, inspired by Wang Xianzhi and Li Beibei, is both precise and vigorous, flowing with ease. In his later years, he incorporated elements of cursive script, adding a delightful playfulness to his style. His poetry is heartfelt and direct, with vivid imagery, a bold and sincere tone, and a fresh, natural quality. Reading his verses evokes a sense of exhilaration and passion.
