Features: The "First International Academic Conference on Chinese Lexicology and the Fifth National Symposium," jointly organized by the School of Liberal Arts at Wuhan University and Commercial Press, was held from April 18 to 23, 2004, at Wuhan University. Like the previous four conferences, each with its own fresh spirit, this conference brought new changes—it strongly advocated the following principles: integrating China and the world, bridging the past and the present, strengthening theoretical construction, and focusing on the linguistic life. The main topics included: ① Theoretical research on Chinese lexicology with an emphasis on inheritance, borrowing, innovation, and interdisciplinary integration. ② Lexicological research oriented toward Chinese information processing and pragmatics. ③ Research on the linguistic life of overseas Chinese and the compilation of the "Global Chinese Dictionary." This change undoubtedly signifies a new academic perspective and research direction, indicating the new development of Chinese lexicological studies. Delegates from 11 countries and regions attended the conference, including 107 formal representatives and 47 attending representatives. Scholars from China and abroad, ancient Chinese language researchers and modern Chinese language researchers, theoretical researchers and applied researchers broke down barriers and gathered together to exchange ideas, creating a fresh atmosphere. The entire conference was grand, enthusiastic, and highly productive. The conference received 125 papers, covering almost all important aspects of modern and ancient Chinese lexicological theory and application, with a noticeable advancement in both breadth and depth. Many topics fully reflected the conference's principles, demonstrating strong theoretical, practical, and applicability. Due to space limitations, only 24 papers were selected for this issue of "Theories and Applications of Lexicology" to share with fellow scholars. This issue was edited and compiled by Zhao Shiju, with editorial committee members arranged in alphabetical order by surname: Li Rulong, Su Baorong, Su Xinchen, Xu Zuyou, Zhang Zhiyi, Zhao Shiju, Zhou Hongbo, and Zhou Jianan. Additionally, Zhai Yinghua from Wuhan University participated in the proofreading of the English section and is hereby gratefully acknowledged. Editors, Spring 2005
