The social life of the 20th century was turbulent and underwent profound changes, while the Chinese-language literature of the 20th century was also vast and dynamic. Through its own dramatic evolution, it wrote a brilliant page in the five-thousand-year splendor of Chinese civilization. Featuring collaborations between renowned writers and celebrated works, it reviews and showcases the abundant achievements and significant progress made in Chinese literature during the 20th century. The selected writers have their representative works included in "Selected Collections." In addition to the works, experts have written research-oriented prefaces, and bibliographies of the writers' creative works have been compiled. This is intended to provide readers with necessary guidance and additional information to understand the writers, their works, and their characteristics as well as their positions in literary history. It is a reflection of the vitality of an ancient nation and a cultural treasure that stands out in history with bold strokes and enduring legacy.
In the late 1980s and mid-1990s of the last century, a phenomenon emerged in the film and television industries and theater circles across the country: people rushed to adapt Li Jieren's novel Ripples on Dead Water. This phenomenon vividly demonstrated the vitality of literary masterpieces. At that time, Guo Moruo, who was in Japan, read Ripples on Dead Water, Before the Storm, and The Great Waves and immediately wrote an article praising him enthusiastically, comparing Li Jieren to Zola. The literary historian Cao Juren believed that "no contemporary writer was more successful than Li Jieren," while Sima Changfeng thought Li Jieren possessed "a spirit that rivaled Flaubert and Tolstoy." Since the birth of the "Trilogy of the Xinhai Revolution," it has had a wide influence in countries such as Japan, France, and Yugoslavia. Over time, people have gained an increasingly profound understanding and fairer evaluation of Li Jieren's life and his nearly six million words of translated and original works. The great river flows on, its waves never ceasing, but the man has passed, and his works live on. This book includes several of his long, medium, and short stories.
