Does a child with a fever easily get epilepsy?

Patient's question:

Female, 7 years old, my child has always had poor physical health. She often gets fever and colds. Now, I want to know if children with fever are prone to epilepsy?

Doctor's answer:

Children's fever and epilepsy are actually two different concepts. As mentioned earlier, children's fever can lead to high fever seizures, also known as febrile seizures. Only a small portion of febrile seizures can develop into epilepsy. Therefore, there is basically no causal relationship between simple fever and epilepsy. Of course, children with epilepsy may experience recurrence during a fever, which is possible. Some parents choose to medicate their children in this way. After epilepsy treatment, the results are usually good. Using antiepileptic drugs, the child stops having seizures. However, if they catch a fever or cold one day and have another seizure, it may be triggered by the fever, but it does not have a direct effect on epilepsy.
