However, painting always requires the eyes to lead the brush—only when the eyes are in place can the brush follow. The eyes, in turn, stem from the heart. One must first have "a harmonious connection with the spirit" to achieve "transcendent inspiration." Thus, "wind and spirit," "vitality," "taste," and "wisdom" are the ultimate keys to painting technique. Elder Wu's creation of images is all about conveying the meaning of the painting. Observing his works, the brushwork is brisk, brimming with life, and his emotions are irresistible. Each stroke is full of charm and inspiration, with ink and color resonating between the brush and paper, shining brightly. The emotions shine on the paper, captivating the viewer. Though there is a saying, "The breath is coarse and the brushwork is chaotic, with nothing right," observing his works reveals that they are light yet not thin, profound yet not murky. The essence of breath and the depth of understanding are already fully expressed in his early works. Additionally, observing his works from his later years, one sees even greater momentum, more fluid brushwork, a transformed spirit, and stronger bone force. There is also a sense of aged simplicity and rustic charm, which is undoubtedly beneficial for learners and researchers to study and appreciate.
