Features: Over the past two decades of reform and opening-up, China's economy has maintained rapid growth while issues such as insufficient public service provision, social inequality, and widening income disparities have become prominent. From recent reform practices, it has become a major topic affecting China's sustained economic growth and the construction of a harmonious society to improve social redistribution through government transformation, coordinate major interest relations, and establish public service systems and mechanisms. On December 10-11, 2005, China (Hainan) Reform and Development Research Institute, in collaboration with the Norwegian Institute for Urban and Regional Research, the Stockholm Institute for Transition Economics, and the German Technical Cooperation Agency, jointly hosted the "International Forum on Government Transformation and Social Redistribution." Over 300 Chinese and foreign officials and experts participated in the forum. The meeting focused on discussions about China's practices and Nordic experiences in social redistribution, the construction of public service systems, income distribution gaps and coordinated economic development, as well as topics related to social redistribution, social security, compulsory education, public health, and government transformation. This book is a selection of papers submitted by Chinese and foreign experts attending the "International Forum on Government Transformation and Social Redistribution."
