Patient's question:
Medical history: A total hysterectomy and bilateral adnexal removal surgery was performed in July. According to the pathology report, it was diagnosed as endometrial invasion and cervical adenocarcinoma, moderately differentiated. 13 days after the surgery, there was mild bleeding, with a small amount and pinkish color, about a few drops throughout the day. During the follow-up visit, the doctor said it was normal but did not examine internally. One month after the surgery, mild bleeding reoccurred, with a slightly brighter red color than before, about 1-2 drops throughout the day, and blood-tinged urine. During the follow-up visit, the doctor recommended complete rest, prescribed medication, but did not examine internally. The day before yesterday and yesterday, I took hemostatic pills and traditional Chinese medicine. However, the blood-tinged urine appeared first, followed by normal urine, with a bright red, blood-tinged color, no clots. Now the urine has a slightly dark red hue.
Is it normal for the blood-tinged urine to increase after taking the hemostatic pills?
Doctor's answer:
Six weeks after a total hysterectomy, the patient should go to the hospital for a follow-up examination to assess the wound healing. Sexual activity is generally prohibited for three months after surgery to facilitate wound recovery. After that, sexual activity can be resumed. In clinical practice, subtotal hysterectomy is often performed on young women with no abnormalities in cervical cancer screening. Since the cervix is preserved, the vaginal depth remains unchanged, resulting in a better sexual experience compared to a total hysterectomy. However, regular cervical cancer screening (Pap smears) is necessary to prevent cervical cancer or stump cancer.
Research shows that ovarian function may be affected 3–5 years after a hysterectomy, leading to menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes, sweating, irritability, and vaginal dryness, which can impact sexual activity. In such cases, it is advisable to consult a doctor. Hormone replacement therapy or topical treatments like fish oil ointment may be used to improve sexual harmony. Additionally, appropriate physical exercise and practicing couple's health exercises can also aid postoperative recovery and enhance sexual satisfaction.
