Author: Shao Bowen
Publisher:
Publish Date: 2005-01-01
Features: This book consists of 20 volumes. The author experienced the Wang Anshi Reforms in his early years, the Yuanyou Faction Strife in his middle years, and the Jingkang Calamity in his later years, making his observations and insights extremely rich. The book contains extensive accounts of the Wang Anshi Reforms and also records some of the court regulations, institutions, and anecdotes of the early Northern Song Dynasty. The Shao Family's Records of Observations, written by Northern Song scholar Shao Bowen, is also known as The Shao Family's Records of Observations from Henan or The Shao Family's Earlier Records of Observations. The "rdquo;" prefix was added by later scholars to distinguish it from The Shao Family's Later Records of Observations by Shao Bowen's son, Shao Bo. The content of the book can be broadly categorized into the following types:
1. Records the words, thoughts, anecdotes, and even some domestic trivialities of both proponents and opponents of the Wang Anshi Reforms, providing unique historical materials for later generations to understand this period. Shao Bowen offers both praise and criticism for key figures on both sides, such as Wang Anshi and Sima Guang, but overall, he tends to commend the opponents of the reforms more, giving them greater approval in terms of their moral integrity and political stance than the reformers.
2. Records some of the court regulations, institutions, and anecdotes from the Northern Song Dynasty's court and palace. Apart from Shao Yong's fantastical writings, the book also allows readers to understand this great scholar's moral character and literary achievements from the perspective of his daily life and social interactions.
However, the book also contains many inaccuracies and malicious slanders in its records, primarily due to Shao Bowen's political biases toward the reforms and his partisan views on the factional struggles. In summary, The Shao Family's Records of Observations is a valuable historical source for studying the history of the Song Dynasty, particularly the history of the reforms, and holds even greater significance for research on the faction opposing the Wang Anshi Reforms.
