Chapter Overcoming Fatigue Syndrome Section General Fatigue and Methods to Eliminate It
Recognizing Fatigue
Fatigue is commonly expressed as "tiredness." Generally, everyone has experienced this. When the body is active to a certain extent, the working capacity of tissues, organs, or even the entire organism temporarily decreases, a phenomenon known as fatigue. Fatigue is further divided into physical fatigue, primarily caused by physical tension, and mental fatigue, primarily caused by mental tension. Why do people get tired? Research in martial arts and physical therapy indicates that whether it is physical or mental fatigue, it is actually a protective response of the cerebral cortex. Changes in the internal environment promote protective inhibition in the brain, and fatigue indicates a decrease in the working capacity of the central nervous system. When muscles are activated to a certain depth, factors such as the depletion of energy substances, the accumulation of metabolites in the blood, and the disruption of homeostasis in the internal environment are all causes of fatigue.
From this, it can be seen that fatigue is a response of living organisms to adapt to internal and external environments and is also a physiological defensive reaction. Given this, recognizing fatigue and taking measures to eliminate it are of considerable importance.
Fatigue produced during physical activity is a comprehensive physiological process. It first involves changes in the internal environment and the dysfunction of different physiological functions, leading to protective responses in the central nervous system. The symptoms of fatigue can generally be categorized as follows:
(1) Self-perceived symptoms: Such as general fatigue, heavy head, drowsiness, and weakness.
(2) Mental symptoms: Such as poor concentration, irritability, and frequent mistakes.
(3) General symptoms: Such as pale complexion, dizziness, muscle twitching, shortness of breath, dry mouth and tongue, hoarseness, lower back and leg pain, etc.
When the body exhibits these symptoms, it is essential to rest promptly and make necessary adjustments to daily routines to effectively eliminate fatigue and restore energy.
Methods to Eliminate Fatigue
Since fatigue is caused by physical activity and mental stimulation, stopping activity and quickly removing oneself from adverse environments are undoubtedly the best means to eliminate and prevent fatigue. Methods to eliminate fatigue are divided into two forms: static rest and active rest (also known as positive rest). Each method has its own role and limitations, and it is best to combine both.
During static rest, activities such as good sleep or quiet meditation help the body's systems naturally adjust and allow the cerebral cortex to temporarily relax. This aids in reducing sympathetic nervous tension and promoting parasympathetic nervous excitation, benefiting the body's rest and recovery. It also helps restore physical strength, thereby eliminating fatigue. In most cases, switching muscle movements as a means of active rest is extremely beneficial for eliminating fatigue.
