Wondering if optic atrophy can be cured?

Patient's question:

A 20-year-old man gradually started feeling unwell, but he didn't know why. He lacked energy. He wants to know: Can optic atrophy be cured?

Doctor's answer:

Cerebral edema and inflammation of the retinal fundus can lead to optic nerve atrophy, except for causes such as eye trauma, glaucoma, tumor compression, and increased intracranial pressure. Clinical manifestations include vision loss, which can be severe enough to cause blindness. Optic nerve cells are irreplaceable, so after atrophy, their additional functions are lost, and this loss of vision is irreversible. Currently, there is no effective clinical method to alleviate optic nerve atrophy, but B vitamins or growth factors can be used to maintain existing vision.
