Features: The writing of English case reports and English ward rounds are important components of bilingual medical education in internal medicine, serving as one of the pathways to cultivate the cross-cultural communication skills of current medical students and physicians. Addressing the needs of bedside learning and teaching for medical students in China's seven-year and eight-year programs, we organized the heads of clinical departments from the Department of Internal Medicine at Shanghai Medical College of Fudan University to write this clinical case analysis with Chinese-English comparisons. It serves as supplementary material for medical students during clinical rotations and internships, as well as examples for English ward rounds.
We designed the outline based on diseases of each system in internal medicine and selected typical cases to write them. The cases are organized by symptoms, providing clinical data from the initial diagnosis and gradually delving deeper. Based on the given information and clinical reasoning, diagnoses and differential diagnoses are presented, followed by treatment plans and, finally, comments. This approach is a bedside learning guided by clinical problems. Additionally, the cases are written in Chinese-English parallel form, allowing readers to train their clinical thinking while learning English case writing styles, familiarizing themselves with English medical terminology and usage. If paired with oral reading, it can further enhance English conversational skills. This book can also serve as a reference for clinical physicians and graduate students.
When using this book, it can be approached progressively. For physicians with weaker English foundations or schools without bilingual teaching conditions, they can first train their clinical thinking using Chinese case histories, then compare and read the English versions. On this basis, gradually increase the reading of English case histories and correct pronunciation to achieve familiarity and conversational skills, ultimately reaching the goal of writing English case histories and conducting English ward rounds for their own clinical patients.
The book includes eight chapters covering respiratory diseases, cardiovascular diseases, digestive diseases, renal and urological diseases, and hematological diseases, among others.
