The original Essentials from the Golden Cabinet was part of the Treatise on Cold Damage and Miscellaneous Diseases (16 volumes) written by Zhang Zhongjing during the Eastern Han Dynasty (i.e., the Golden Cabinet and Jade Box Essentials of Formulas). It was originally compiled in 3 volumes: the upper volume distinguished between cold damage, the middle volume discussed miscellaneous diseases, and the lower volume recorded formulas and treated gynecological conditions. Later, it was revised and renamed Essentials from the Golden Cabinet with Formulas by Lin Yi and others during the Song Dynasty. It is one of the earliest Chinese medical texts dedicated to discussing miscellaneous diseases, covering a broad and systematic range of content. The book consists of 25 chapters, listing over 60 conditions and 262 formulas.
Live Interpretation of the Essentials from the Golden Cabinet employs various methods to provide a comprehensive and flexible explanation of the original text using modern logical thinking. The main approaches include:
- Annotating and translating the original text into modern colloquial language, either by chapter or sub-section.
- Inserting engaging illustrations to aid in explanation.
- Categorizing the content of each volume and chapter, and presenting it as much as possible in chart form.
- Combining the pathological mechanisms, methods, formulas, and medications discussed in each volume and chapter to supplement interesting formula diagrams, case studies by famous physicians, and rhymes. This aims to create a book that is rich in knowledge,, and reference material, combining theory with practice. It not only serves as an enlightening guide for general readers but also offers significant inspiration and assistance for students and professionals in medical schools and the medical field.
