Features: Medicines are indispensable consumer goods that accompany human survival and health. In the evolution of civilization and the advancement of science, medicines have a glorious and long history. Over five thousand years, humans have continuously discovered, developed, refined, and applied medicines in their struggle against diseases. Through the efforts of countless medical and pharmaceutical professionals, medicines have evolved from vague mixtures to molecular compounds with known spatial structures. Research on their mechanisms of action has also progressed from tissues and organs to receptors, target enzymes, and the genetic level, gradually revealing the ways medicines function in the microscopic world of humans.
With the development of medication practices, people have gradually realized that the function of medicines has also been elevated from treating diseases to improving the quality of human life. Medicines encompass both the dual significance of general and special commodities. While they possess the common attributes of general commodities (including name, brand, trademark, price, and quality) and enter clinical or consumer markets through market mechanisms and exchange channels, medicines are substances that save lives, treat diseases, and maintain people's safety. At the same time, they are high-tech products with attributes such as specificity (requiring physician diagnosis and prescriptions), professionalism (targeting specific systems), duality (therapeutic effects and adverse reactions), timeliness (urgent need and shelf life), incomparability (unparalleled significance), and reliability. Therefore, they differ from general commodities but ultimately must follow the market and value principles of commodities.
Additionally, medicines have unique special characteristics in aspects such as naming, chemical structure, research and development, production, market circulation, marketing and sales, clinical selection, pharmaceutical services, specifications and packaging, promotional publicity (advertising), and storage and maintenance. As a result, they have independent and special principles and requirements in management and operation.
Medicines Commodities and Information Science is a pioneering discipline aimed at elaborating on the aforementioned characteristics of medicines. This book serves as one of the training materials organized and implemented by the Chinese Pharmaceutical Association for the "Million Pharmacists Care Project," as well as a theoretical basis for reference in the market operations, sales, and management of the pharmaceutical industry.
