Clear thematic unit arrangement, highlighted section-based teaching, emphasis on student autonomy, and cultivation of practical application skills to build a solid foundation in French for beginners. With the deepening exchanges between China and France in economic, cultural, and educational fields, the original university French textbooks can no longer meet societal needs. New Century College French is meticulously written for learners of public French and second foreign language French, emphasizing the teaching philosophy of improving students' language communicative competence, particularly listening and speaking skills. This book is the student workbook for the second volume of New Century College French. In its compilation, it follows the structure of the student workbook and has the following features:
1. Unit and Section Structure: The student workbook is organized into units based on commonly used themes in French culture and daily life, with each unit highlighting the introduction of a specific theme. Within a unit, it is further divided into four sections: Grammar and Practice (Grammaire et pratique), Vocabulary and Practice (Vocabulaire et pratique), Language Activities Centered on Reading Comprehension (Activités de compréhension écrite), and Language Activities Centered on Listening (Activités orales). The teacher workbook is also structured similarly to the student workbook, with targeted content. This unit and section structure offers the following advantages:
1) Groups similar functional-notional items into the same unit, facilitating teacher-led instruction and student practice. The objectives of teaching activities are clear, making instruction more focused.
2) Increases the frequency of vocabulary related to the same functional-notional item, aiding students in association and memory. Each grammar or vocabulary item is immediately followed by exercises, providing highly targeted training and effective teaching results.
2. Emphasis on Guided Instruction and After-Class Learning: Adhering to the student-centered teaching philosophy, this teacher workbook recommends that all exercises be completed in pairs or small groups during class. It advocates for teachers to guide students' language practice while rejecting the traditional one-on-one teaching model. Teachers provide collective guidance on language points, while all language activities are carried out autonomously by students. This book includes exercise answers, translations of main texts, detailed grammar supplements, and teaching suggestions, allowing teachers to focus more on lesson organization. Considering the lack of teaching resources among university French instructors, it also provides rich background materials. To give teachers more autonomy, these sections are written in French.
Student autonomy remains the guiding principle of New Century College French. In the after-class reading section of the student workbook, teachers are responsible only for checking comprehension in class without providing explanations. The autonomous listening section is entirely completed by students after class.
