Features: When people think of old Shanghai architecture, they often mention iconic buildings such as the Great World Theatre, the Hongkong and Shanghai Bank, the International Hotel, Nanyang Public College, the Moller Residence, and Xiangyan Lane. However, they may not be as familiar with apartments. In reality, many of Shanghai's apartments are part of its classic architecture. Apartments are a category of residential buildings, and by definition, they are public living spaces. From an architectural perspective, they are residential buildings with separate units. In the mid-19th century, the emergence of European terraced houses broke the traditional concept of standalone single-family homes. The appearance of the Chelsea Old Swan in 1876 caught the eye of those accustomed to single-plot homes, and the delicate architectural style of the Anne period had a significant influence in the United Kingdom and the United States. Shanghai's apartments reflect a side of its social economy and daily life, as well as the development of architectural technology. Today, amidst the diverse modern architectural landscape of Shanghai, these apartments may appear somewhat dated, but they are efficient and particularly so for those listed on the list of outstanding protected modern buildings. These apartments bear the marks of historical vicissitudes and the culture of historical architecture, making them a valuable heritage of Shanghai's city.
