Is it okay not to shower during your period?

Patient's question:

I got married last year. Recently, I've been experiencing lower abdominal pain, especially during my period. I'm very worried it might affect fertility, and I also feel extremely cold and afraid of the cold. May I ask if it's okay not to take a bath during my period?

Doctor's answer:

Taking a bath seems like a minor matter, but it is crucial for women during their menstrual period, as it relates to their health. It is currently widely recognized that showering or wiping is beneficial, while tub baths should be avoided. During menstruation, the uterine lining sheds, leaving a wound in the uterine cavity. The cervical mucus is flushed out by menstrual blood, and the cervix is slightly open, with menstrual blood remaining in the vagina, creating a breeding ground for bacteria. Therefore, cleaning the external genitalia and preventing infection are essential. However, in a tub bath, water and bacteria from the vagina can travel up through the cervix to the uterine cavity, which is why it should be prohibited.
