Features: The origin of poets singing chrysanthemums dates back very early. The earliest records of painting chrysanthemums are found in the Xuanhe Huapu, which documents that famous artists during the Song Dynasty, such as Huang Xian, Zhao Chang, Xu Xi, Teng Changyou, and Huang Jushi, all painted winter chrysanthemum pictures. The Song Dynasty Paintings Album introduces the precious works Vase with Flowers by Song Dynasty Yao Yuehua and Chrysanthemum Thicket with Flying Butterflies by Song Dynasty Zhu Shaozong, both of which have been verified by experts. Both paintings use the meticulous brushwork technique of outlining and shading. By the Yuan and Ming dynasties, ink-wash painting had developed in the depiction of chrysanthemums, enriching the expressive techniques. For example, Shen Zhou, Tang Yin, and Chen Chun of the Ming Dynasty were all renowned masters of ink-wash chrysanthemum painting. During the Qing Dynasty, even more masters emerged in painting chrysanthemums, and their styles and forms became increasingly diverse. Notable figures include Zhu Da, Yun Shouping, Shi Tao, Gao Fenghan, and the Eight of Yangzhou. In modern times, masters like Xu Gu, Zhao Ziqian, Wu Changshuo, and Pu Hua used bold brushwork and ink, writing poems to express their emotions, conveying the steadfastness, purity, and resilience of autumn chrysanthemums. Therefore, the outstanding chrysanthemum works created by painters have become models for later generations to learn from.
