Features: Liu Gongquan (778–865), styled Chengxuan, was a native of Huayuan, Jingzhao Circuit. He passed the imperial examination in the early years of Emperor Xianzong's Yuanhe reign and served as a Scholar of the Imperial Secretariat, eventually rising to the position of Grand Preceptor of the Heir Apparent and Vice Grand Tutor. He was enfeoffed as Marquis of Hedong and later known as "Liu Shaoshi." From a young age, Liu Gongquan was exceptionally intelligent, skilled in poetry and rhetoric, and particularly adept at calligraphy, earning him the title of "child prodigy." He was known for his upright and honest nature. Emperor Muzong of Tang, who loved pleasure and neglected governance, once asked Gongquan about the art of calligraphy. Taking the opportunity to offer advice through his response, Gongquan said, "The way one uses a brush lies in the heart; when the heart is upright, the brush will be upright."
