Features: This manuscript is an overall research on the private financial industry in Shanghai during the early years of liberation. At the time of Shanghai's liberation in late May 1949, there were over 200 banks and companies, and even by the end of 1952, when the unified state-private joint venture banks were established, there were still more than 60 institutions across five groups. It is neither possible nor necessary to describe the experiences of each individual institution in a limited space, especially in each chapter. However, it is essential to select typical facts of representative financial institutions as much as possible. Currently, some chapters of the manuscript (e.g., business operations) mainly consist of overall statistics and summaries, still lacking the necessary elaboration and analysis of individual cases.
Additionally, a complete Shanghai financial history includes multiple parts such as business institutions (like banks and companies), industry associations, financial markets, and financial professionals. The current manuscript has covered all these aspects, establishing a relatively comprehensive system for the study of Shanghai's private financial industry after the founding of the People's Republic of China. It should be noted that, in addition to the private financial industry, the important subjects mentioned in this manuscript, such as the New China National Bank and the state-private joint venture banks, as well as significant events like the financial takeover, are all worthy of specialized research.
