This Introduction to the Theory of the Five Elements and Six Qi is divided into two parts. The first part is the main text, which is compiled based on five consecutive nights of lectures given by my master at Guangxi University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The second part is the appendix. Appendix I is a summary of the Five Elements and Six Qi theory based on the "Seven Treatises on the Five Elements and Six Qi," which extracts the "constant" content from these treatises for easy reference. The phase patterns listed in the summary were all introduced by my master during the lectures. Appendix II is a selection of excerpts from some of my master’s letters, which reveal his life’s aspirations, academic attitude, scope of study, and depth of thought. Therefore, we believe this Introduction is not only an introduction to the theory of the Five Elements and Six Qi but also an introduction to the entire field of TCM, as well as an introduction to traditional Chinese culture. My master’s aspiration was to establish a universal foundational discipline within the framework of traditional culture, akin to modern mathematics—Yin-Yang Mathematical Theory. Although life is unpredictable, my master was unable to fulfill his wish. However, through his teachings and the intellectual sparks conveyed in his letters, we may yet find some inspiration and guidance. As for the depth of my master’s knowledge and the level of his cultivation, that is something the readers must judge for themselves.
