The second edition of this book, with its comprehensive and insightful introduction to surgical knowledge and techniques, won the Third Prize of the National Health Ministry's Science and Technology Progress Award in 1996. This book is one of the excellent reference books that many domestic gynecologists and obstetricians, especially young physicians, regard as essential self-study materials. Due to its significant social and economic benefits, it was awarded the Second Prize of the "First Double-Benefit Book Award" by the People's Health Publishing House in 1998 and was selected as one of the 10 outstanding books in the 45-year history of the publishing house. This honor was primarily attributed to the contributions of Professor Su Yingkuan.
Mission and Innovation
The revision plan for the third edition of Surgical Gynecology and Obstetrics originated in 1998 after receiving the "First Double-Benefit Book Award." To meet the needs of, we began preliminary discussions under the urging of the publishing house. However, unexpected events occurred—I, my respected mentor and the editor-in-chief of this book, Professor Su Yingkuan, passed away suddenly due to a heart attack at the age of 80. The Shandong Medical University (now the Clinical Medical College of Shandong University), particularly the Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics at the Provincial Hospital where he worked, including the writing team of Surgical Gynecology and Obstetrics, were in profound grief, and the revision plan was consequently shelved. Under these circumstances, the responsibility of organizing the revision naturally fell upon me, with the goal of making the new edition of Surgical Gynecology and Obstetrics even more fulfilling for, especially to ensure that my mentor, Professor Su Yingkuan, could rest in peace. As the editor-in-chief, I channeled my grief into strength, determined to make the new edition surpass the second edition in both content and form, adding more brilliance to this outstanding book.
How to assemble the writing team and incorporate the youthful and capable into the writing group; how to concisely integrate the new theories, knowledge, surgeries, and techniques in gynecology and obstetrics from recent years at home and abroad into the new edition; how to organize the content to better meet the needs of readers and facilitate their understanding and learning. These have been the key questions sought during the organization of the third edition's revision. After extensively reviewing domestic and international literature, closely integrating clinical practice in gynecology and obstetrics, and carefully analyzing readers' needs, we decided to boldly innovate the structure of Surgical Gynecology and Obstetrics. Based on the original format of indications, contraindications, preoperative preparation, postoperative management, positioning, anesthesia, surgical steps, and precautions, we created two major sections for each major surgery—"Preoperative Assessment" and "Surgical Exploration"—to collect important new theories, knowledge, surgeries, and advancements in gynecology and obstetrics from recent years at home and abroad, making the structure more complete, the content richer, and the book more practical. The new edition of Surgical Gynecology and Obstetrics also invited renowned gynecologists and obstetricians from home and abroad—Professor Lang Jinghe, Professor Xia Enlan, and Professor Liu Yan—to contribute chapters on malignant ovarian tumor surgery, hysteroscopic surgery, and laparoscopic surgery, presenting their extensive clinical surgical experience to the readers.
