Access 2003 is one of the applications in Office 2003 Professional Edition or Enterprise Edition. It is a "database management system" with strong functionality and user-friendly features, capable of creating standalone or client-server database applications. Among all database systems currently on the market, Access 2003 is arguably the most user-friendly and operates in an advanced database management system and application development environment.
In terms of data integration, Access provides a robust solution, integrating all database components—such as tables, queries, forms, modules, reports, and macros—into a single file. Access allows for easy creation and management of "database systems," extending the functionality of Excel applications and enabling seamless interaction with Excel. Moreover, it handles significantly more records than Excel, making it an ideal "entry-level database application" and a "conversion center" for various data import and export tasks, equipped with powerful capabilities.
However, simply operating Access 2003 is not sufficient. Its full functionality cannot be fully realized, nor can the actual needs of "users" be met. At this point, "VBA program code" must be used to meet the requirements of clients and designers, ensuring that Access meets the demands of automation and accuracy.
This book adopts a focused and accessible approach to VBA application, enabling users to quickly grasp the essence of VBA design and understand the variations in program applications. It is suitable for "beginners" or "users with basic Access knowledge," allowing them to enter the field of VBA design quickly and without barriers.
In the early chapters, "Chapter 1" introduces basic Access operations and fundamental database concepts. "Chapter 2" and "Chapter 3" explain automation concepts and VBA program code through macros, followed by an in-depth exploration of module architecture, access, and management. "Chapter 4" covers the design environment of the VB Editor, which is an independent operational environment similar to Visual Basic program code design but leverages the Access object model and various reference project object models. "Chapter 5" introduces form design, as VBA program code can use forms as interfaces, requiring a basic understanding of form design. "Chapter 6" provides a clear explanation of menus and toolbars, which play important roles in forms or applications, allowing users to manage them programmatically. "Chapter 7" discusses DAO objects for accessing Jet databases, including how to set references and operate on Jet databases through objects. "Chapter 8" explores message dialog design and error handling, both of which are crucial for program error management and information provision, ensuring more complete and professional application design. Examples are used to illustrate these concepts clearly. "Chapter 9" explains how to use the ADO object model (a later database object model) to create recordset objects and query objects, as well as how to edit and manage records. "Chapter 10" introduces the practical design of VBA flow commands using the recordset model, providing a detailed explanation of basic flow command applications, as these commands are essential in various programs. "Chapter 11" covers file import and export, explaining how to use VBA program code to perform various file and data conversions. "Chapter 12" focuses on converting databases to HTML or ASP files and how to publish these files to web servers. "Chapter 13" discusses the concept of XML import and explains how XML files can be rapidly converted with databases.
There are many object models available in Access VBA, and in this book, the author introduces the Access object model, DAO object model, and ADO object model through examples (accompanied by illustrations). These three object models are fundamental to database operations, and the book uses examples and illustrations to highlight key points and operations, making it easier for readers to understand practical applications. By gaining a basic understanding of these object models, readers can quickly connect with database object concepts and design various VBA programs.
In summary, this book covers a broad range of topics, with a focus on Access VBA program design, enabling readers to quickly apply the examples in the book to create their own programs and expand the application scope of Access 2003.
Finally, the publication of this simplified edition was made possible by the efforts of Du Jianxia, Xie Jiawen, and Lu Zhen in completing the manuscript. The author also thanks all relevant staff and teachers for their years of teaching experience, which contributed to the successful publication of this book. Wishing everyone good health and all the best.
