How can one know if a medication abortion is complete?

Patient's question:

I took a medication abortion and tested negative with a pregnancy test. Can this indicate that I have completely miscarried? I hope a kind friend can help me solve this problem. Thank you.

Doctor's answer:

Generally speaking, if the flow is clean, there will be no blood after about a week. However, for some individuals, it may take around ten days. To determine if the flow is clean, it is decided whether a D&C (dilation and curettage) is needed. This decision is made at the hospital through an ultrasound. Usually, it is easier for the flow to be clean within 49 days of pregnancy. At the hospital, observation is typically required for about 2 hours. A medication-induced abortion is considered clean when the gestational sac is expelled. In this case, there may be a small amount of bleeding, but as long as the gestational sac is expelled, it is considered clean.
