Patient's question:
My mom has cats and dogs at home. Since I got pregnant, I occasionally come home and have to interact with them. Will this cause any problems?Doctor's answer:
Toxoplasma is a microscopic parasite. Cats may have this parasite, but not all cats do. The toxoplasma in cats is usually transmitted from other sources, not naturally present in them, such as eating mice. Indoor cats generally do not get infected, except in rural areas where cats are often free-roaming and eating mice is common.Additionally, eating undercooked meat, especially pork or lamb, can easily transmit toxoplasma. Like cats, pigs and sheep can also be infected with toxoplasma.
Some birds, unclean vegetables, and other items may also harbor toxoplasma.
Humans can also have toxoplasma.
