Early pregnancy tests can detect ectopic pregnancy?

Patient's question:

I came on my period around February 2 last month. I had sex before the 15th, but not between the 16th and 20th. I had sex again after the 21st (without using contraception). Recently, I've been experiencing lower abdominal pain, a sensation of heaviness, lower back pain, and slight breast tenderness. I'm not sure if it's my period coming or if I'm pregnant. This morning, I bought a pregnancy test, but it showed negative (only one line). Could you please tell me if ectopic pregnancy cannot be detected with this test?

Doctor's answer:

Ectopic pregnancy can also be detected with pregnancy test strips during pregnancy. I don't know how your menstrual cycle has been in the past. If your periods have often been delayed, you should get checked. If your periods were regular, you can take medication to induce menstruation for treatment.
A positive HCG reaction indicates that ectopic pregnancy usually ruptures around the 40th day of pregnancy. If you experience mild pain in the lower right abdomen and heavy bleeding, you can check for ectopic pregnancy by having an ultrasound at the hospital or getting a blood test to check hormone levels.
