Don Quixote is the Spanish literary masterpiece with the highest international prestige and the greatest influence.
Part One narrates how Don Quixote, obsessed with knightly novels, attempts to imitate the life of ancient wandering knights. He assembles a suit of armor and rides a lean horse, embarking on his first adventure but returning injured. On his second adventure, he recruits his neighbor Sancho Panza as a squire and together they embark on many absurd and foolish deeds: mistaking windmills for giants, treating inns as castles, and seeing flocks of sheep as enemies, nearly losing his life before being rescued and brought home.
Part Two describes Don Quixote and his squire Sancho Panza embarking on their third adventure. It depicts Don Quixote's thrilling encounters along the way and how the Countess tricks both Don Quixote and Sancho Panza. It also portrays how Sancho becomes the governor of an island and rules it. Eventually, Don Quixote is defeated by his neighbor, Sancho's relative Simon, dressed as a knight, and returns home, bedridden. Upon his death, he finally realizes the truth and curses the knightly novels.
