How to determine how long you are pregnant

Patient's question:

I have experienced five menstrual cycles this year, starting from February 25th, with the following lengths: 44 days, 41 days, 42 days, 46 days, and 47 days. My last menstrual period started on September 24, 2005, and ended on September 28.
Could you please help me calculate how many weeks pregnant I am now, given that I have just taken a "early pregnancy" test?
By the way, does my irregular menstrual cycle have any adverse effects on my pregnancy?

Doctor's answer:

If you were supposed to come but didn't, and it's been over 7-10 days, you should consider pregnancy. It's recommended to use early pregnancy test strips. Instead of calculating based on the time of intercourse, it's generally counted from the first day of your last menstrual period. If the test shows two red lines, it indicates a positive result, suggesting the possibility of pregnancy. However, you can also have a blood hCG test at the hospital 7 days after intercourse. Starting three months before pregnancy and continuing for three months after, folic acid should be taken to prevent neural tube defects in the fetus. Rest and nutrition should also be paid attention to.
