As an anthology of literary history and theory, this book systematically compiles important research achievements on 20th-century Chinese literature since the 1980s, showcasing the overall level and new directions of the discipline of modern and contemporary Chinese literature. The selected essays have all undergone rigorous screening. They include reevaluations of propositions such as late Qing fiction, the May Fourth literary tradition, and the "Seventeen Years Literature," as well as comprehensive perspectives on topics like Chinese modernism and the "implicit writing" of contemporary literature. They examine both internal literary issues, such as the genres of fiction, poetry, prose, and drama, as well as literary translation and literary criticism, and also interpret the relationships between literature and society, literature and the city, and literature and other media. They feature in-depth discussions of major figures like Lu Xun, Mao Dun, and Cao Yu, as well as meticulous analyses of renowned works such as The Family, Rickshaw Boy, and White-haired Girl. On an individual level, each essay presents rigorous and fresh arguments, demonstrating strong intellectual depth and impact. When compiled as a book, it broadly encompasses various methodologies and styles of research in modern and contemporary Chinese literature, offering ample inspiration and insights in terms of disciplinary methodology.
