China is a nation of poetry. As a special lyrical form of poetry, ci has long been a radiant gem in the artistic treasury of the Chinese nation. It requires rhythm, tonal patterns, and rhyme, much like regulated verse; it emphasizes musical modes and can be set to music, making it closely linked to music; its lines vary in length and structure, offering greater flexibility and diversity than the uniform regulated verse; it boasts a wide array of forms, ranging from high-spirited and passionate to melancholic and sorrowful, or tender and lyrical, making it particularly suited to expressing complex and multifaceted emotions. The bold and unrestrained ci of past dynasties represent an extremely valuable part of China's rich poetic heritage. Reading and appreciating these brilliant ci poems not only provides artistic enlightenment and enjoyment but also inspires passion, broadens the spirit, and instills a sense of noble righteousness.
In light of this, the editor has carefully selected approximately 250 outstanding and widely beloved works from the vast body of masterpieces spanning millennia, arranging them in chronological order according to the emergence, development, decline, and revival of ci. Each poem is accompanied by illustrative artwork, and concise yet comprehensive annotations follow. The introduction consists of two parts: a translation and an analysis. The author's bio may appear before, after, or within the text, depending on the layout.
