The exercises after each unit are designed to be open, flexible, and encourage students to think, fostering creativity and improving language proficiency, comprehensively achieving the goals of the "New Curriculum Standards." With the promulgation of the new "English Curriculum Standards," the reform of middle school English teaching has entered a new stage, raising the requirements for students' knowledge, communicative competence, and cultural awareness to a new level. Extracurricular reading is no longer just an optional supplement to classroom teaching but has become an indispensable part of English learning. The "New Curriculum Standards" have made clear stipulations on the quantity of extracurricular reading for students and proposed a series of new requirements in terms of development goals. To this end, Shanghai Foreign Language Education Press has co-authored this series of "PEP-Longman Middle School English Graded Readers: New Curriculum Standards Encyclopedic Series" with Longman. The purpose is to implement the teaching philosophy of the "New Curriculum Standards" into extracurricular reading and help students meet the requirements set forth by the "New Curriculum Standards." The series is compiled under the guidance of the "New Curriculum Standards" and has the following characteristics: 1. In terms of overall design, it is compiled according to the levels of the "New Curriculum Standards," with strong targeting; the number of volumes increases progressively at each level, fully meeting the reading needs of students at different stages. 2. In terms of material selection, it highlights personalization, choosing materials with a sense of the times and rich content based on the different reading interests of students at different ages, helping students broaden their knowledge and cultivate cross-cultural communication awareness while completing the reading tasks set by the "New Curriculum Standards." 3. In terms of difficulty, it balances the improvement of abilities with the cultivation of reading interest and confidence, creating a relaxed learning atmosphere for students. 4. In terms of learning strategy guidance, reading skill guides are written for each volume based on the requirements of the "New Curriculum Standards at each level, guiding students to develop good learning habits. 5. In terms of exercise design after each unit, it highlights flexibility, openness, and participation, combining reading, speaking, and writing, stimulating students' imagination and creativity, and helping them comprehensively achieve the goals of the "New Curriculum Standards."
