What are the differences between amniocentesis and cord blood sampling?

Patient's question:

Doctor, hello. Now the hospital where I am located has not confirmed the diagnosis and has sent me to another hospital for a follow-up examination. I am currently not sure what to do. Should I still have an ultrasound? Is amniocentesis the same as cord blood?

Doctor's answer:

Umbilical cord blood puncture and amniotic fluid puncture can both check for spinal deformities in the fetus. Umbilical cord puncture depends on the position of the placenta to determine the puncture site. It can be performed on the part of the umbilical cord floating in the amniotic fluid, or on the root of the umbilical cord on the fetal side or the root on the placental side. Most often, the umbilical vein is chosen for puncture. The method is basically the same as amniotic fluid puncture, except for the different puncture site. Amniotic fluid puncture is a method of prenatal diagnosis.
