Problems after childbirth regarding menstruation

Patient's question:

I had an abortion on December 24th, and it took about six days for my discharge to clear. After the doctor prescribed medication, it cleared up three days later on January 1st. However, on January 5th, which is this morning, it came back again, and it was bright red but in small amounts. Could this be my period?

Doctor's answer:

Generally, menstruation occurs about 40 days later. After a woman undergoes an induced abortion, hormonal changes in the body and damage to the endometrium during the surgery can lead to changes in menstruation for most women post-surgery. Some may experience an increase or decrease in menstrual flow, while others may have delayed menstruation, and various other changes. After such occurrences, menstruation usually gradually returns to normal within about 2-3 cycles.
