Trichomoniasis vulvovaginitis what effect does it have on men

Patient's question:

Detailed medical condition and consultation purpose: If you have trichomoniasis and have sexual intercourse, will it affect the male partner? What symptoms might he experience?

Doctor's answer:

Hello: After being diagnosed with trichomoniasis, active treatment should be initiated. Systemic medication, such as oral metronidazole (Flagyl) tablets, 200mg three times daily, for 7 days as a course, is recommended. Both married partners should take medication together. During systemic treatment, 200mg of metronidazole tablets should be placed in the vagina nightly, for a 10-day course. To enhance efficacy, the vagina and external genitalia should be flushed with 1% lactic acid or a 1:5000 potassium permanganate solution before medication.
The following precautions should be noted:
1. Pay attention to proper disinfection and maintain clean, dry external genitalia.
2. Wear loose, breathable underwear to avoid irritation of the external genital skin, which may worsen symptoms. Change underwear frequently, and boil underwear, basins, towels, etc., for disinfection to prevent reinfection.
3. Adhering to standardized medication is key to treating this condition. During treatment, both married partners should take medication simultaneously, and use condoms during intercourse to prevent cross-infection.
4. Medication should be taken at bedtime to facilitate full decomposition and absorption of the drug.
5. Since trichomoniasis often recurs after menstruation, even when trichomoniasis tests are negative, follow-up tests should still be conducted after menstruation. A diagnosis of cure can only be confirmed after three consecutive negative test results.
