Is pelvic connective tissue the same as pelvic inflammatory disease?

Patient's question:

Is pelvic connective tissue what is commonly known as pelvic inflammation?

Doctor's answer:

The pelvic connective tissue is the extraperitoneal tissue located behind the pelvic peritoneum, in the spaces on both sides of the uterus and in front of the bladder. There are no distinct boundaries between the connective tissues in these areas. This condition often occurs when bacteria enter and cause infection due to various situations such as tears of the cervix or upper vagina during childbirth or cesarean section, cervical lacerations during difficult cervical dilation, the formation of hematomas around the vaginal stump during total vaginal hysterectomy, or accidental injury to the uterus and lateral wall of the cervix during induced abortion.
