His parents were devoutly religious and often took their children out to preach God's will, singing hymns. However, the onlookers paid them no heed, either giving them cold stares or mocking them. They grew up without proper education but were repeatedly wounded in spirit. Their family did not find happiness through worshipping Jesus; instead, they ended up struggling to make ends meet. This novel portrays the tragic life of an American youth in the 20th century. The protagonist, Clyde, was born into poverty and, after entering society, became obsessed with money and indulged in lust. To climb into the upper class and marry a wealthy woman, he was willing to murder his former lover. From a vain youth, he descended into becoming a murderer, ultimately being sentenced to the electric chair.
