Features: This book provides us with an excellent read to understand this period of history. Regarding the biography of Ding Ruchang, its level of detail is currently unparalleled. While meticulously documenting the (tortuous) experiences of Ding Ruchang, a representative figure in the First Sino-Japanese War, the book also briefly outlines the social and historical background of late Qing China. It clearly narrates the causes, course, and outcome of the First Sino-Japanese War, as well as its impact on China's later development. It also records in relatively great detail the heart-wrenching history of the Beiyang Navy from its founding, formation, to its eventual destruction. Therefore, "China's Modern Naval Commander—Ding Ruchang" is not only a biography of Ding Ruchang but also a history of the late Qing dynasty's collapse, the Beiyang Navy, and the First Sino-Japanese War.
While researching and collecting a vast amount of historical materials, the author also traveled extensively, gathering firsthand information by visiting Ding Ruchang's descendants and exploring historical sites such as Weihai's Liuqiu Island and Qingdao to collect data. These materials were comprehensively compiled and edited into the book. The book's unique feature is its inclusion of anecdotes and rumors about Ding Ruchang. With a rigorous structure, clear organization, rich materials, detailed content, concise language, and illustrations, it enables readers to acquire more knowledge in a shorter time, making it an excellent textbook for patriotic education. As Chinese people, it is essential to read this book to remember history and strive for excellence! Learn from the past to strengthen China!
