Patient's question:
In response to the call, I got an IUD twenty years ago. Recently, my period hasn't come. When should I remove the IUD? Can I leave it in? What are the potential aftereffects?Statement: Since getting the IUD, everything has been fine, and everything has been normal.
Doctor's answer:
Hello, an intrauterine device (IUD) is a form of contraception placed inside the uterine cavity. Since the initial devices were mostly ring-shaped, they are commonly referred to as "birth control rings." Stainless steel rings can be left in place for 15–20 years, while other types such as silicone, plastic, or copper-containing rings can be used for 5–7 years. They are typically removed 6 months to 3 years after menopause. Therefore, birth control rings cannot be left in place for a lifetime.
