Patient's question:
Hello! I am a pregnant woman and would like to ask for advice. My last menstrual period was on August 18th. In mid-September, I experienced stomach pain and took two bottles of gentamicin sulfate (80,000 units each). Could this have any impact on the fetus? Will it cause ototoxicity? Thank you!Doctor's answer:
Erythromycin is a contraindicated drug during pregnancy due to its significant nephrotoxicity and ototoxicity. It may affect fetal health, but the likelihood and severity of the impact vary depending on factors such as dosage, duration of use, and individual differences. It is highly variable from person to person. If the pregnancy is not to be retained, it should be terminated in the near future. If the pregnancy is to be preserved, special prenatal and childbirth examinations should be conducted, such as the Down syndrome screening between weeks 14-20 of pregnancy and the anomaly scan using three-dimensional or four-dimensional color ultrasound between weeks 23-26. If the results of these examinations are both high-risk, further tests such as amniocentesis or umbilical cord blood tests should be performed.
