Features: Jules Verne was a French writer, known as the "Father of Science Fiction." He was born into a lawyer's family in Nantes, France, and from a young age demonstrated a strong desire for exploration and a rich imagination. At the age of twenty, he studied in Paris, coinciding with the period when European science and technology began to experience rapid development. Under the inspiration of the scientific spirit, young Verne developed a keen interest in various disciplines of the time. He read extensively, accumulating a wealth of knowledge that laid a solid foundation for his future creative work. In 1863, his first science fiction novel, Five Weeks in a Balloon, was published and was warmly received by readers, quickly spreading abroad. From then on, he devoted himself exclusively to science fiction writing, producing a vast body of work numbering over sixty or seventy volumes, collected in a series titled Fantastic Voyages Through Known and Unknown Worlds. Due to the immense popularity of his science fiction novels, he became the science fiction author with the most readers in the world. The fantasies in Verne's works are all grounded in science, and many of the scientific fantasies depicted in his works have been realized today. More importantly, the fantasies in his works are bold and innovative, captivating readers with their realism, vividness, and picturesque beauty. His stories feature thrilling and intricate plots, lifelike characters, and unexpected endings. All of these qualities give his works enduring charm. The Mysterious Island is the final installment of Verne's famous trilogy (The Children of Captain Grant, Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, and The Mysterious Island). The story takes place during the American Civil War, where five Northerners are stranded among the Southern forces, one of whom is a child. They seize an opportunity to escape using a balloon. En route, they are blown by a storm to a deserted island in the Pacific. However, they do not despair but instead band together, using their collective wisdom and hard labor to build a prosperous life from scratch, eventually creating pottery, glass, windmills, and telegraphs. Throughout their years on the island, whenever they face danger, a mysterious figure always comes to their aid—the captain of a cave on the island, Nemo, who had been living there before their arrival. In the end, during a volcanic eruption, they nearly lose their lives until Robert, the son of Captain Grant, commands the Duncan to pass by and rescue them. Upon returning to the United States, these "islanders" resume the work they had established on the island. In this work, the author makes the story's plot deeply engaging, portraying the struggle between humans and nature on the island, technological innovation, and the creative labor of building something from nothing. The work is imbued with an optimistic spirit, firmly believing that humanity's boundless creativity and the power of science will lead to the establishment of an ideal society.
