How should you deal with vulvar itching?

Patient's question:

I often clean my external genitalia, but I still feel itchy. A test of my discharge only showed contamination with miscellaneous bacteria. Despite using some suppositories and cleaning solutions, it hasn't improved. Could you please advise what medication can cure this and help regulate the vaginal pH to normal levels?

Doctor's answer:

Vaginal itching in women can be categorized into three types: The first type is caused by unknown reasons, such as physical irritation (underwear, friction, etc.) and other unknown causes. The second type is caused by vaginitis, such as bacterial vaginitis, trichomoniasis, candidiasis, and atrophic vaginitis. The third type is caused by other gynecological inflammatory conditions, such as pelvic inflammatory disease and cervical inflammation, leading to excessive or abnormal vaginal discharge and resulting in itching in the external genital area. All these types can be treated with topical anti-itch cleansers for cleaning and relieving itching. Additionally, if it is determined to be the second or third type, targeted gynecological anti-inflammatory medications can also be used concurrently.
