I have had two medical abortions. Can I choose a painless abortion if I am pregnant?

Patient's question:

I had a medication abortion last October and another one in February this year. I am currently pregnant. Could you please tell me if it will be harmful to have a D&C procedure? Can I have a painless abortion now?

Doctor's answer:

Artificial abortion includes medication abortion and surgical abortion. Generally, if the pregnancy is within 49 days and the gestational sac is visible on ultrasound, medication abortion can be chosen. However, medication abortion has a lower success rate and may lead to incomplete abortion, excessive bleeding after the procedure, and other complications. If the medication abortion is incomplete, a Dilation and Curettage (D&C) procedure is required, which can cause secondary harm to the body.
It is recommended that patients be cautious about medication abortion and consider choosing a safer, more convenient, and less harmful surgical abortion method.
The best time for an artificial abortion is between 40 to 70 days after conception. If the decision is made not to keep the fetus, the surgery should be performed as soon as possible. The earlier the surgery is done, the less damage it will cause, and the faster the recovery will be.
There is no absolute safety; each method has its pros and cons. Choose the appropriate abortion method based on your pregnancy duration.
