Eight months pregnant, why does the stomach hurt acutely

Patient's question:

I am almost 8 months pregnant. Recently, my stomach has been piercingly painful, like a stone, and I don't know the reason. When it hurts, my stomach becomes very hard. Additionally, I am a high school teacher and am still teaching classes. I don't know if it has any impact! Thank you for telling me!

Doctor's answer:

Several weeks before delivery, the uterine muscles become more sensitive, and irregular uterine contractions may occur. These contractions are short in duration, weak in strength, or limited to the lower abdomen or groin area. After several hours, they stop, and they do not lead to cervical dilation or fetal descent, so they are not considered labor. This is referred to as false labor. Some pregnant women may even feel irregular contractions as early as the second trimester. Multiparous women are more likely to experience this than primiparous women. Currently, the possibility of false labor is high, but since 39 weeks is close to the due date, the possibility of true labor cannot be ruled out. If contractions occur every 5-6 minutes, lasting for about 30 seconds, it is true labor, and you should go to the hospital promptly to prepare for delivery.
