Can you get pregnant after your period during sexual activity?

Patient's question:

After two or three days of sexual activity, will you get pregnant if you have your period four or five days later?

Doctor's answer:

No.
The fertile period is the easiest to get pregnant! A normal fertile woman has one menstrual period per month. The time from the start of one menstrual period to the first day of the next is called one menstrual cycle. From the perspective of contraception, a woman's monthly menstrual cycle can be divided into the menstrual period, ovulation period, and safe period. Generally, women of normal fertile age only release one egg per month. After the egg is released, it can survive for 1 to 2 days. Sperm can survive in a woman's reproductive tract for 2 to 3 days, and their fertilizing ability is usually within 24 hours after ovulation. Sperm loses the ability to combine with an egg after 2 to 3 days. Therefore, having sexual intercourse 2 to 3 days before ovulation and 1 to 2 days after ovulation increases the chance of pregnancy, and this period is called the fertile period or the risky period. A woman's ovulation date is usually about 14 days before the next menstrual period.
