Features: The skilled in war do not subdue the enemy by fighting, but by making the enemy yield; they do not capture cities by attacking, but by causing them to fall; they do not destroy nations by prolonged warfare, but by competing for victory in the world in a complete manner. Thus, the army is not exhausted, and victory is secured—this is the method of stratagem. — Sun Tzu
If laws are unclear and rewards and punishments are unreliable, if the silver flags do not stop and the drums do not advance, even a hundred thousand soldiers are of no use. — Wu Qi
The form of war is like water. The form of water is to avoid heights and flow toward lowlands. The form of war is to avoid solid points and strike at the void. Water adjusts its course according to the terrain, and war adjusts its strategy according to the enemy. Therefore, there is no constant form in war, nor a constant shape in water. Those who can adapt to the enemy's changes and achieve victory are called divine. — Sun Tzu
The wisdom of the military strategists is stern, profound, and inscrutable, boundless like the heavens and earth, and inexhaustible like rivers and streams. In the battlefield, only success and failure determine the heroes. Since ancient times, famous generals have been known for their charm, yet heroes often struggle against the allure of beauty. Xi Shi brought the Xia dynasty to its downfall, Daji led the Shang dynasty to ruin, Bao Si caused the Zhou dynasty to collapse, and Xi Shi contributed to the fall of Fuchai. Many heroes and beauties have been intertwined with tales of national decline. Historically, the most outstanding generals often did not live out their days in peace. They did not die on the battlefield but were betrayed by their own swords.
War is the highest language of human competition, and China is one of the countries that has experienced the most wars. Statistics show that from ancient times to the late Qing dynasty, there were over 3,700 recorded wars, accounting for about one-fourth of the total number of wars worldwide. The frequent, diverse, large-scale, and expansive nature of war has been the primary driving force behind the development of military wisdom. From these wars emerged countless military strategists, and generations of renowned generals arose.
The defining characteristic of military wisdom is that victory is the only supreme principle. As long as one defeats the enemy, they are a success, and victory is the sole criterion for judgment. The recognized ancestor of military strategists is Jiang Taigong, who aided King Wu in defeating the tyrant of Yin. He was a systematic theorist of military strategy and is hailed as the "Forefather of Military Strategy." During the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods, due to the frequent and large-scale wars, military wisdom flourished, giving rise to world-class strategists like Sun Tzu, Wu Qi, and Sun Bin. They not only created many famous battle cases but also left behind profound strategic theories that had a far-reaching impact both domestically and internationally.
After the Qin and Han dynasties, in wars that were complex, intense, and grand in scale, elite generals who inherited military wisdom emerged one after another. Their strategies and maneuvers became even more unpredictable and masterful. Unlike other schools of thought, which often hid their strategies behind secrecy and conspiracy, military wisdom is straightforward and practical. To defeat the enemy, military strategists often employ deceptive tactics such as feigning, creating momentum, using decoys, employing spies, and attacking the enemy's morale. This is determined by the extreme antagonistic nature of war. The unconventional thinking methods of military strategy are undoubtedly beneficial in stimulating and broadening people's minds, especially in breaking free from rigid and stagnant mindsets.
In today's world, with its ever-changing dynamics, intense intellectual battles, and increasingly complex economic competition, learning from military wisdom is highly advantageous. It must also be recognized that the wisdom of military strategists is not limited to the military. It has had a profound impact on the entire Chinese nation, from the cultural spirit to the daily of the people, from the struggles of emperors and generals to the routines of ordinary citizens. In essence, the enigmatic wisdom of military strategists has been ingrained in traditional culture, becoming an indispensable part of China's intellectual and strategic heritage.
