Over 100 years ago, French troops occupied Spain. On a scorching summer day in a dry region, the Spanish people poisoned the water to prevent the French invaders from drinking. A small team of French invaders, led by Captain Villon, searched everywhere for water. They walked many miles and found a house on a hillside. They rushed up the hill and came to the front of the house. They saw that the well of this family had been filled with stones. The French soldiers cursed and pushed the door open. Inside the house was a Spanish woman, holding a small girl in her arms, staring blankly at them. The soldiers asked her for water, but she shook her head and said nothing. Captain Villon ordered, "Search!" The soldiers searched the house. Suddenly, a cheer came from the inner room: "Found it! Found it!" Then, two soldiers came out, holding a large jar together. The soldiers rushed forward, competing for the water jar. Captain Villon ordered them to put it down. He walked over, looked at the full jar of clear water, and felt his throat burning as if he couldn’t wait to pour it into his mouth. But Villon did not drink. He first poured a small cup and handed it to the Spanish woman, saying, "Please drink first!" The Spanish woman took the cup, looked at the child in her arms, and decisively drank the entire cup. Villon then poured half a cup and gave it to the little girl, saying, "Drink a little too." The mother’s eyes twitched slightly, and she slowly took the cup, kissed her daughter, and whispered in Spanish, "Child, for your mother, drink." The daughter also did the same, holding the cup in both hands and drinking it all. Seeing that both the mother and daughter had drunk the water, Villon felt relieved. He poured a full cup and drank it down in one gulp. Then, he had each soldier drink a few sips. The entire jar of water was finished, and the French soldiers sat down to rest. Unbeknownst to them, soon afterward, they all spat foam, their eyelids flipped, struggled for a while, and then died. The Spanish woman and the child she was holding also died. It turned out that the Spanish woman had already poisoned the water in the jar. The mother and daughter had sacrificed themselves for their country, perishing alongside the enemy! P15-16
